In Australia there are areas where local conditions create an increased likelihood of corrosion. They are made from steel wire mesh laced together and filled with rocks to create different kinds of structures. Special consideration should be given to material selection and design in these areas. But thinking of getting some gabion cages will not break the bank as they are reasonably priced and affordable.
Most gabion walls can be built without a concrete foundation, however some supported walls and special engineer designed walls may require a concrete foundation.
Angular rock is the best gabion fill as it provides a good interlock and therefore less deformation of the face occurs. When using rounded river rock as gabion fill, it is recommended that you use the heavier gabion baskets, which are less likely to deform under load.
Three optional filling materials, river rock, gabion rock or fox rock.
